Hospice of the Valley Applauds Nationwide Crackdown on Hospice Fraud

Today the federal government announced a six-month ban on any new hospice and home health agencies across the country to halt rampant Medicare fraud and abuse. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) enacted this moratorium to prevent “bad actors” from exploiting patients by providing little or no care.

It is important to clarify this ban only applies to new hospice business applications. It does not affect patient care — patients will continue to receive their full Medicare hospice benefits.

“As the only nonprofit hospice in Maricopa County, we are very pleased about today’s announcement,” said Hospice of the Valley CEO Debbie Shumway. “We have worked tirelessly with legislators, healthcare partners and Medicare to advocate for reform and are grateful that this sacred benefit is being preserved to support patients and their loved ones during an emotional and vulnerable time of life.”

This crackdown will have a profound impact in Arizona, where hundreds of new hospices have cropped up over the past few years. Many are in business for a short time, selling quickly at a profit, often leaving patients without the care they need. During this moratorium period, officials will more aggressively investigate and remove fraudulent providers.

Founded in 1977, Hospice of the Valley is committed to being a safety net for our community, ensuring that all in need receive the care they deserve. Ranked top in the nation for high-quality care, the organization serves Maricopa and northern Pinal counties and the Tucson area.
