Integrative Therapies

Hospice of the Valley’s philosophy addresses not only physical symptoms of illness, but also social, intellectual, spiritual, and emotional aspects. Integrative therapies -- which include music, art and massage -- enhance quality of life in ways that traditional medicine does not. Trained and certified professionals provide the services, which are supported through fees, grants and private donations.

Massage Therapy
In the world of high-tech medical care, where touch is often neglected, massage therapy offers physical, mental, and emotional benefits. The therapist uses massage to align and balance the energy of the body. Whether soothing an anxious or uncomfortable patient or alleviating a family member's stress, massage is a valuable part of hospice care.

Music Therapy
Research shows that music has a positive effect on the body, mind, and emotions. It can lower blood pressure, basal metabolism, and respiration rates, and it increases production of endorphins, which reduce pain and control heart rate. Music can be used to aid digestion and reduce stress. Live harp music at the bedside offers solace and comfort to the dying and their families. Music therapists also play the guitar or flute and sing to patients. CDs of old favorites and relaxing instrumentals are available as well.

Art Therapy
Art therapy is used to help people work through feelings of fear and loss. The act of creating can be inspiring and uplifting. Scientific studies tell us that art can heal by changing a person’s physiology and attitude from one of fear to one of creativity and inspiration. Art moves a person into a different brain wave pattern, positively affecting the autonomic nervous system, hormonal balance and neurotransmitters. Awakening expression, creating a product and healing through the process -- art therapy is used to express feelings resulting from fear and loss.
